The 2026 Olympic Olympics take place this year in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo Italy. Some of the 16 popular Winter Olympic events include: Figure Skating, Curling, Speed Skating, Alpine Skiing, Freestyle Skiing, Nordic Combined, Biatghlon, Bobsleigh and the new sport of Ski Mountaineering.
Notable highlights
- New Sport: Ski mountaineering will be featured for the first time at the 2026 Games
- Gender Balance: The 2026 Winter Olympics are set to be the most gender-balanced in history, with female athletes expected to make up 47% of the participants
- NHL Participation: The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced its return to the Olympics for both the men’s and women’s tournaments in 2026
- Russian Athletes: Russia will not be eligible for team sports, and individual athletes will only be permitted to compete after a vetting process to ensure they do not have ties to the military or support for the war in Ukraine
- Host Selection: Milan Cortina d’Ampezzo was selected as the host city on June 24, 2019, after they beat out other candidate cities like Stockholm
- Paralympic Games: The Paralympic Winter Games will be held in the same locations from March 6 to March 15, 2026
